Statement

Lake Reflections 1 (22 x 36 in) acrylic on canvas “The development of a sense of place is an ongoing process…It requires more than an experience of sight, sound, and smell.  It is an inward journey of connections:  between people and place, and between past and present…It is precisely what is invisible in the landscape that makes it important.”*

I search for the intangible spiritual essence of a place and work intuitively to translate this to canvas. In most cases small direct on-site sketches are done outdoors and then larger acrylic works are developed in my studio. Vibrant colour is vital to my art. A red underpainting provides the framework and heart of each work…the subsequent layers of paint result in rich complex textured works of art.

My artwork includes a series of Western Canadian landscape works from Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan that range in size from miniature “cigar box” paintings to larger canvas works. An Irish landscape series, international landscapes as well as an abstract series have been completed in recent years.
